ABSTRACT

Water is a central ingredient in the two scientific episodes. This chapter describes the two scientific episodes. The first one deals with polywater, the hypothesized joining together of water molecules to explain some strange experimental results. The other case involves the claimed discovery of the ability of water to remember materials dissolved in it long after those materials have been removed. The chapter includes the cold fusion fiasco, used a form of water as the agent for wondrous claims. There are many similarities between the polywater and cold fusion cases. Both attracted a lot of attention by scientists who saw a need to test the reported results, to try to replicate the phenomena. Unlike the polywater case, the original results raised such fundamental skepticism that further work seems unlikely, though the popularity of the homeopathy industry may ensure continuing interest.
