ABSTRACT

Ann Snitow's 1993 lecture in Prague refers the relationship between Eastern European women and Western feminists. If the notion of the crusading Western feminist does not reflect reality, the picture of her "victim", the bewildered Eastern European woman in danger of indoctrination, is absurd. The literature coming from feminists in Eastern Europe makes quite plain that, rather than accepting Western frameworks and terminology, the writers are challenging both and adapting them to the situation. American Nanette Funk sent Croatian writer and feminist Slavenka Drakulic an invitation to contribute an essay for an anthology on postcommunist gender politics. Even feminists who never allied themselves with the socialism of the Left are reminded how much their ideas, goals, and language resemble those of the oppressive communist system, which also spoke of an oppressed group and promised liberation.
