ABSTRACT

National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) leaders continued to oppose Alice Paul. At their annual convention, they reiterated their support of the Shafroth Amendment. Paul called for a convention of women voters to be held in Chicago in early June for the purpose of organizing a National Woman's Party (NWP). Membership in the NWP would be confined to enfranchised women. Its sole purpose would be to promote a federal amendment. Paul stressed this when she spoke about organizing the political party. In preparation for the Chicago meeting, Paul, along with her hand-picked team of organizers, headed west to drum up as much support as possible among women voters. Paul chose Chicago as the convention city for two reasons. First, both the Republicans and the Progressives were going to hold their conventions in Chicago. And, second, the national press would be there in full force.
