ABSTRACT

In this lecture I want to discuss a solution to the problem of superstars, those lumps of matter having masses of 109 suns which Fowler and Hoyle [HoFo 63] have been discussing recently. We take a model which is very simple, yet may possess a great many of the attributes of the real things. After we understand how to go about solving the simple problem, we may worry about refinements in the model. The starting point is the differential equation of general relativity, the Einstein equation.
