ABSTRACT

Modest space can be made, however, for the fermentation of cultural hospitality to begin again. To commence gardening organically does not mean to simply stop using chemical sprays: Resistance to plant disease must be enhanced in ecological, soil-based ways. Examination of the “environment” in which the inhabitants of the modern world attempt to dwell would reveal it as an increasingly dense virtual reality erected with the organizational chart as its icon. In a world full of service systems in which everyone is very busy, it is easy to believe that few Good Samaritans remain. Individuals, and individual relationships, do not exist independent of their associational settings. To try to restimulate hospitality in a place, then, one must be keenly attentive to the vitality of local economies. Setting out to enhance the hospitable aspects of a culture does not mean one must adopt a romantic view of society.
