ABSTRACT

The school change strategies depend upon the principles of equality and respect that schools universally proclaim. For individuals' beliefs about gays and lesbians to change, they must be brought to see that homosexuality is not a threat to their moral system or be persuaded to change their values so as to accommodate it. Teachers of color may have greater license to draw parallels among biases, but even they must tread carefully. Multiple minority gays and lesbians can at least speak to the convergence of oppressions in their experiences. Homosexual people would be held to a higher standard for the sake of a propaganda campaign. Cooperative learning has been cited as a positive factor. A democratic school or classroom requires that students labor to form and govern their small community.
