ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to capture trends in opinion found in a survey of approximately 250 editorials from respected Iranian, Egyptian, and Jordanian newspapers. A comparison of these various editorials reveals both common concerns for the region as well as differences based on the specific geopolitical positions and indigenous makeups of the countries in close proximity to the Persian Gulf crisis. Two main concerns voiced by many editorialists throughout the region were the illegitimacy of Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and US intervention in Middle Eastern affairs. Other Egyptian editorials focused on and critiqued Iraqi aggression, and editorialists who aligned with the Egyptian administration emphasized the need to squelch that aggression by any means, including force and all-out war. This attitude toward the war came forth in the official media coverage that emphasized the allies' military superiority and inevitable victory.
