ABSTRACT

Filmmakers, of course, all have a point of view in their work, but once a filmmaker working with historical fact begins to alter that fact to serve his or her point of view, it would seem that an ethical line is crossed. Television journalism is also under constant pressure to become more entertaining in order to grab viewers and sell advertising. For this reason, it's becoming more and more Hollywood in its approach to delivering the news. In January 2000, a most extreme example of this came to light. Even the sophisticated network newscasts, which pride themselves on being pillars of journalistic integrity, are not immune to this type of temptation. There has been a proliferation of pseudo-news programming in recent years, aptly dubbed the "news magazine". These shows make a pretense at providing the viewer with responsible reporting. It may even be that they follow the ethical strictures of journalism.
