ABSTRACT

The spherical harmonics are useful in solving problems possessing spherical symmetry. First, we wish to find Green’s function inside a hollow conducting sphere of radius a, which is grounded, that is, the potential is zero on its surface. One can also improve the last member of such a sequence by an approximate extrapolation to the limit that employs it and one or more of the preceding numbers. Let the conducting sphere be bisected by a plane conducting sheet of unlimited extent, thereby producing the situation of a hemispherical boss raised over a plane surface.
