ABSTRACT

When a plane electromagnetic wave interacts with a macroscopic dielectric, one talks of reflection and refraction. For the interaction of the wave with a small object, the appropriate word is scattering. Small refers to the size of the object in comparison to the wavelength of the radiation. This chapter considers the elementary theory of scattering. It discusses scattering of a wave polarized in the scattering plane and scattering of a wave by a bound charge.
