ABSTRACT
Burleigh High was the product of the union of two secondary modern schools established in the late fifties, Burleigh Boys School and Burleigh Girls School. The two schools had functioned side by side in separate buildings for about a decade, sharing only a common dining hall used at different times of the day. The school had been threatened with closure in the mid-eighties, due to falling rolls, and had been saved thanks to a Burleigh community campaign. The school grounds, having catered for two schools, were extensive, including games fields and football pitches. There was also a large dining hall, a large theatre hall, an indoor gym, a sick bay and a number of other facilities. The chapter explores the pupil's orientation towards school, their behaviour, their reputation and possible connections between the three. The school gave the new questionnaire severe scrutiny and eliminated two important questions concerning parental occupation and education.
