ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the position of the pupils within the school establishment in order to facilitate an understanding of their position. An account of their feelings towards school will follow, which will make clear a conflict between their attitude and behaviour, and will show contradictions in their disposition towards school. The eagerness with which most teachers asked for, and the relief with which they greeted the pupils' transfer to a different group indicated how insecure the pupils' position in Burleigh High was. A comparison between group A and group B would have to point out that arguments supporting the view that misbehaviour in school is an expression of pupil culture appear to bear some validity. It is important nevertheless to stress that there are a number of pupils who seem to be unable to set their aims and proceed to fulfil them, because they appear to lack a certain degree of control over their own behaviour.
