ABSTRACT

This chapter offers six case studies of interviews of various kinds and in a variety of situations. The general characteristics of the studies are Julia Field, Jill Keegan, Janet Powney, Norman Evans, Di Bentley, Dave Ebbutt and Steven Eales. In each case there are differing number of interviewees, in different contexts and being interviewed for different purposes. The full study involved the use of a variety of research techniques covering a range of sources of information: desk research, and exploratory and depth interviews. Transcripts of interviews, then, are essential to demonstrate the authenticity of the findings. Careful selection will be necessary, not least when one inclusion must represent similar findings from other data. The researcher's relationship to the investigation is complex but the findings have their own rigour. The teacher-researcher is well-placed to pursue an ethnographic approach.
