ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces research from Celebrity Studies on the death of celebrities. These include reactions to the death of Michael Jackson and David Bowie. The phenomenon of Elvis fans mourning at Graceland is discussed. The connection between celebrities and the sacredness of the self is focused in death in particular ways. This phenomenon of celebrity death is seen as further evidence of the shift towards the self as the primary religious sacred.
