ABSTRACT

The educational policy of the Greek Government rests on the basic assumption that education is a social good and something to which every citizen has a right". Education is provided on three levels: primary education, secondary education and tertiary education which encompasses university-level education and non-university education. The provision of primary and secondary education for children with special educational needs is a multi-faceted new extension to education, as far as the Greek educational system is concerned. To manage integration in rural Greece, three types of special education units are being used: special school, special class andpre-vocational workshop. Integration programmes, when well planned and implemented, can be of social and academic benefit for all students involved, both handicapped and non-handicapped. Special education occurs within an ordinary school. The students of the special school are classified under five levels, according to their IQ: Pre-school level, Lower level, Middle level, High level and Higher level.
