ABSTRACT

Opponents of psychological history have sometimes deluded themselves into thinking that psychohistory was just a passing fancy that is dead and gone. Most are drawn to the field by the possibility of gaining new and deeper insights into the human condition. Those who are psychoanalysts or greatly influenced by depth psychology find it easy to accept meaningful interpretations of people individually and in groups. Psychoanalytic and psycho historical ideas spread not primarily through the conferences and journals specifically devoted to them, but through books, television, and articles that adopt and disseminate them. Political opinions also play a role in some scholars’ journey to psychohistory. There’s always been a left of center inclination among significant numbers of the International Psycho historical Association. Many see psychohistory as an instrument for social change.
