ABSTRACT
A music leader in higher education has to deal with change in the broader university context and also with the revolutionary changes occurring in contemporary music. These include constant advances in music technology, sonic arts, music production, ubiquitous digital music distribution and music reception. For the music leader this situation is complex because the forces, concerns and pressures of higher education and the global university can conflict with the persistent demands of present-day musical culture or run contrary to the creative possibilities of new music learning and innovation. This chapter calls for a greater care of the emerging professional musician so that leadership qualities can be developed in line with the greater demands on the profession.
