ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an analysis and critique of the leadership and musician development on higher music education, bringing together key concepts and challenges and suggesting how these might be enacted and addressed across tertiary music education. The authors underline the importance of leadership development for student musicians as well as key practices of leadership in the context of musicians’ work, institutional policy and higher education. The chapter outlines several scenarios through which higher music education might take action. It then considers further development including leadership in social development, learner development and faculty engagement, as well as delineating critical lessons on leading change in general, both today and tomorrow. The authors end by highlighting important tensions found in contemporary higher education leadership.
