ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the importance and practices of sound research methods and creative processes. It introduces students to qualitative and quantitative methods and when to use one or the other, as well as when to mix methods. It also describes theoretical and arts-based (or performative) research. Examples of major data collection and arts research strategies, including conducting library research, exploring primary sources, recording one’s own observations with research journals and field notes, distributing surveys, conducting interviews and focus groups, and using theory and practice to conduct research, are illustrated. The main differences in methods between arts scholarship and other types of research are demonstrated as well.
