ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 addresses general dissertation writing issues starting with the importance of writing early and strategies to avoid procrastination. The chapter looks at some typical organisational structures of masters’ dissertations. The general requirements of dissertations are addressed. These are followed up in more detail in subsequent chapters in Part III. Audience and purpose are essential components of writing and this is considered in TESOL and applied linguistics. The chapter provides guidance on the basics needed for academic writing with advice on vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. The chapter emphasises the need to consult assessment criteria while writing and provides some examples of these.
