ABSTRACT

One of the larger institutions is Konferensi Waligereja Indonesia, or the Conference of Indonesian Bishops, which is the major organizational and legislative body of the Indonesian Catholic Church. The activities of Pusat Musik Liturgi (PML) extend beyond the Catholic Church; however, it is always on irregular and individual, rather than institutional, basis. This chapter presents PML’s history and discusses the goals of PML as seen by its leaders. Though PML can be considered a pioneer in institutional efforts in inculturation, other institutions also promote inculturation through publications, radio programs, and occasional music events. Many of these institutions have a local impact, substantially enriching the local Christian music scene. The foremost institution devoted to inculturation is the Center for Liturgical Music, based in Yogyakarta, central Java. PML houses a collection of traditional instruments from different regions of Indonesia, assembled during the lokakarya trips.
