ABSTRACT

The Florenese songs in Madah Bakti come from all five major ethnic groups on Flores: Manggarai, Ngada, Ende, Lio, and Larantuka. The presence of Pusat Musik Liturgi (PML) on Flores, evident through lokakarya, has multiple effects on traditional and Christian music as well as religious musical life in general. By means of lokakarya, PML disseminates a certain “universal” knowledge. In conjunction with lokakarya activities, PML has also generated a substantial number of source recordings of traditional local music from various regions of Indonesia—documentary and archival work of significant value. PML publications of lokakarya songs include one-part song collections, choir arrangements, and songs with organ accompaniment in western notation. The arrangements produced by PML are reminiscent of others in Europe in the 19th century. Lokakarya songs—when used in the PML publications—are almost always translated into Indonesian, the national language—this practice demonstrates the pan-Indonesian aspirations of this repertoire and its publishers.
