ABSTRACT

People want somewhere that had the expertise of reliable, informed teachers, nurses, care staff, doctors, physiotherapists, speech therapists, psychologists. All professionals must learn the repercussions of any information that they may pass on to a parent. Children with physical disabilities are often catered for in settings which are either not really designed for them or take 'pot luck' in integrated circumstances where the ground has not been fully prepared for their specific needs. The need for communication, coaching or counselling skills, and a framework for professional development for those who are at the first point of contact with families who have a disabled child, has been highlighted. The major problem experienced by the family was the inability of the educational system to respond to the diagnosis of the problem, or even the needs of the child.
