ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book divided into three sections which relate the 'how', the 'what' and the 'who' of education. It explores Curriculum Method and Organisation. The book focuses on the Process of Learning and Development. It discusses the People Involved. Despite this division there is a strong theme that runs throughout. The key skills required by the child are discrimination and generalisation. Only through discrimination will the child be able to see the critical sameness and differences that will enable him to organise his thoughts and experiences and store them in a meaningful, flexible manner, providing him with a basis for rational action. The child must not be encouraged to view himself as completely dependent on other people, but to make choices and decisions and, hence, control his own environment.
