ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some organisational approaches to implementing these techniques with students in micro-environments such as classrooms with a view to optimising staff and student performance. The efficient and effective use of classroom resources has been of concern to practitioners in a variety of educational settings, e.g. day nurseries, classes in primary schools, remedial classes and secondary schools. In a small group arrangement students may be encouraged to assist one another by prompting and reinforcing task completion. Most of the research on room management discussed above made comparisons between room management and either no treatment baselines or slightly modified baselines such as providing trainees with extra materials. Room management is a procedure developed to promote both individual teaching and high activity levels in groups of students. One-to-one teaching is usually the strategy employed in research into teaching mentally handicapped students.
