ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the genetic algorithm and its application in textile manufacturing. It begins with the introduction of nature-inspired nontraditional optimization techniques. The chapter then explains the main operations involved in the genetic algorithm. A step-by-step working principle of genetic algorithm has been discussed with an example of an optimization problem. MATLAB coding of the genetic algorithm is also provided. The application of the genetic algorithm in solving a variety of optimization problems in textile manufacturing is discussed in this chapter. Also given is a moderately detailed outline of the author's research findings with regard to the application of the genetic algorithm in fitting stress-strain curves of polyester and viscose fibers.
