ABSTRACT

This chapter expands on the core signatures identified in Chapter 2 by presenting a framework called the seven modalities. This framework can help to define how different digital scores exist and are experienced or expressed. These modalities can offer ways of describing, analysing and evaluating digital score composition and performance and serve as a model for practical exploration of the digital score. The seven modalities are interface object, material affect, goal, content, language, feedback and flow. Each modality is discussed in turn and illustrated through an analysis of a digital score. Furthermore, they are augmented with exercises and practical tasks appropriate to creative practice with the digital score.
