ABSTRACT

One thing that STEAM spaces and traditional makerspaces have in common is that there is no "one right way" to design them. Both types of spaces are inherently flexible and can adapt to many different locations and situations. Space is often at a premium in schools, so it can be difficult to wrangle a dedicated room or space for STEAM. The Media Center and Computer Lab are most often the rooms tapped to host a STEAM or makerspace. Every STEAM space has its own unique look and personality based on the needs of the students and the use of the space. A STEAM lab for lower-elementary students is going to look different than one designed for middle- or high-school students. Meredith's favorite furniture in her STEAM lab were the diamond-shaped tables that could be combined in a variety of configurations. Power is another big consideration for a STEAM or makerspace.
