ABSTRACT

A close link with Nature Study should be made to increase children's understanding of the cycle of growth from seed to flower, the conditions needed by plants for growth and, with older children, the effect of insects and other garden pests. Any teacher of ESN children is likely to know enough to be able to teach Nature Study adequately as long as he appreciates what he is trying to do. Special knowledge about nature and about the methods of teaching it are obviously an advantage and can have the effect of enthusing a whole class to the benefit not only of their natural history but also of their reading and written English. A proposal to include elementary science in the curriculum for ESN children may appear over-ambitious. The special school teacher is often surprised at the interest and knowledge of his pupils in scientific matters.
