ABSTRACT

This chapter provides valuable information about various apple diseases and their management. The apple tree is a deciduous tree in the rose family best known for its sweet, pomaceous fruit, the apple. Apples are cultivated worldwide as a fruit tree and is the most widely grown species in the genus Malus. Apple trees are susceptible to a number of fungal and bacterial diseases and insect pests. Alternaria blotch has been a severe problem in apple growing areas. On apple, leaves, shoots, and fruits are infected only when young. Apple scab occurs everywhere in the world where apples are grown and causes more losses than any other apple disease. Apple scab can be observed on leaves, petioles, blossoms, sepals, fruit, pedicels, and less frequently, on young shoots and bud scales. Apple scab is caused by the fungus, V. inaequalis. Fire blight is a common and very destructive bacterial disease of apples and pears.
