ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 details the rhetorical characteristics and argument resources of the separators. Separators engage in an aggressive rhetoric that evokes metaphors of war, positions themselves as gatekeepers for definitions and authority, and employs a hierarchy of humans over animals. The defining rhetorical features of the separators are controlling definitions, shifting blame onto the environmental movement, and appealing to the Bible’s authority to construct value hierarchies. These rhetorical features are detailed in the discourse of the exemplar separator, the Cornwall Alliance, and personal conversations.
