Red Vienna

A viable Republican model?
WithYulia Maleta

My social egalitarian model of Republicanism considers historical and contemporary political examples: Red Vienna and Brexit (see Chapter 4). Regarding successful Republican transitional nations, I refer to the Republic of Austria, formed in 1918 (following the demise of the Austro-Hungary empire), as a leading European social democracy. I focus on the landmark Red Vienna (1919 to 1934) era, characterised by egalitarianism and social class diversity, along with middle class and working classes women’s greater participation within civic/civil life.
