ABSTRACT

A purpose in life is evident when individuals pursue long-term aims that allow them to contribute to the broader world in personally meaningful ways. Accordingly, purposeful action can strengthen the bonds of civic friendship. This chapter reviews three far-reaching, high-profile purpose-fostering programs, including The Future Project, Project Wayfinder, and the Fostering Purpose Project. Each program helps young people discover how they can contribute in meaningful ways to their families, communities, and countries. In addition to reviewing the features of each program, this chapter includes a discussion of the shared strategies used to cultivate purpose and civic friendship.
