ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an introduction and background information on the spread of English to the world, emergence of world Englishes (WE) and the relevance of WE to the English Language Teaching (ELT). It reviews the relevant literature on the paradigm of WE, the place of WE in ELT, and teacher perception. The book explains the rationale behind the selection of the data collection instrument and the context of the study, and explores demographics of the participants, data collection, and study procedures. It also explores the practical and pedagogical implications of the findings and provides suggestions for English language teachers, English language teacher education, in-service teacher training, curriculum developers and test designers for English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students, and the ELT industry in Australia and beyond.
