ABSTRACT

The euthanasia of a pet for reasons of severe behavioral problems is likely to be an even more challenging experience, given that in all other respects the pet may be healthy, and much of the time may be a happy, loving companion to his human family. The bond between owners and their companion animals can be a profound and important one, and the magnitude and relevance of this bond may surpass that of the bond between humans. Euthanasia in particular may represent ethical and emotional challenges for pet owners, and can intensify the emotional distress associated with pet loss and complicate the recovery process. Euthanizing a companion animal for behavior problems, even more so than euthanasia for old age or illness, can put owners at risk of disapproval and censure by others who have not gone through this experience.
