ABSTRACT

By way of a review of the GURLS performance during the Hamar Jazz Festival in 2018, the Epilogue reviews the major critical themes and values within European jazz culture which have persevered into this millennium as well as those transformed because of the paradigmatic aesthetic phenomena of popularisation, digitalisation, and remix aesthetics, and of broader geopolitical phenomena such as globalisation and the restructuring of Europe since 1989. These three decades have witnessed a dramatic shift in how music is consumed, organised, performed, and made profitable for those aspiring jazz artists. By querying how remix has altered European jazz in this century, this chapter aims to motivate further studies which also consider the role of the remix, of popular music, of contemporary media such as the music video, and of dance for contemporary jazz culture.
