ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes that Mohandas K. Gandhi has created a potential way out of our current conundrum. It argues that Mohandas K. Gandhi and others have produced cultural innovation by synthesizing elements of these two motifs, addressing the dilemmas that each presents. The chapter shows that Jewish tradition developed a powerful counter-narrative that opposed the violence and promoted a dream of peaceful culture—these themes are presented as counterpoints in the ancient tradition.
