ABSTRACT

The incremental changes to the Euro-Atlantic security order call for an explanation that catches the dynamics of power with reference to the economic base that underpins national power and pays for its military. The dream-like character of grand strategy to shape the nature of political regimes abroad in turn calls for an understanding of the geopolitical lessons derived from past historical experience through which great powers perceive present challenges. Adapted to neoclassical realism, an explanation of policy change (‘y’) is sought by an investigation of power (‘x’) and purpose (‘z’) of the transatlantic alliance.
