ABSTRACT

This lesson plan provides a unique and engaging teaching approach to analyzing dodecaphonic music. Specifically, this lesson explores Luigi Dallapiccola’s “Fregi (“Friezes”)” from Quaderno Musicale di Annalibera using symbols (literal shapes) in order to highlight corresponding rhythmic and/or pitch/pitch-class commonalties between segments of the various row series used in the work. The symbols from this analysis ultimately form an actual frieze that is derived from the score.
