ABSTRACT
This lesson plan offers an in-class exercise aimed at familiarizing students with the motivic and harmonic details of sentences and periods. Students are asked to take the opening two measures (basic idea) of an existing parallel period, and use it as a basis for composing a sentence. Students work in groups, composing phrases that adhere both to the expectations of a sentence, and to the spirit of the original.
