ABSTRACT

This case study explores the cognitive and neurological functioning of an adult male with a sexual offending history. He was detained under the Mental Health Act and was diagnosed with a Learning Disability (LD)and other co-morbid difficulties. It explores the client’s formulation in relation to his offending drawing on the results from his assessments. The client’s cognitive and neurological functioning was assessed utilising the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition, to assess cognitive functioning, the Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System, Third Edition, to assess adaptive functioning, and the Behavioural Assessment of the Dys executive Syndrome to assess executive functioning. The findings were presented and explored alongside structured professional judgment tools and the client’s history in order to develop a formulation of the client’s offending and provide recommendations for treatment. It is essential for the client’s cognitive ability, alongside other assessments such as adaptive and/or executive functioning, to be assessed in order to understand their presentation and link to risk. This is particularly relevant in male LD clients, as there is a higher prevalence of sexual offending within this population.
