ABSTRACT

This chapter is the first to focus on a specific parent community, Intercambio, where English-speaking and Spanish-speaking parents met to learn and practice each other’s languages. Through interview and interaction data, the chapter introduces the Spanish term “convivencia (being together),” which is important to understanding the development of bilingual community at the school. To illustrate processes of convivencia within Intercambio, the chapter offers background on the program, including its activities, demographics, and history. Later sections analyze the group’s joint enterprise and shared translingual repertoire, as practiced within different program activities. To this end, the term affiliation is used to describe the discursive processes that constructed convivencia moment by moment within community interactions. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of the significance of Intercambio for parent empowerment at Live Oak.
