ABSTRACT

Although tandem learners enjoy tandem work, they are often unable to recognize their learning progress. The experience and the perception of one’s own success, however, plays an important role in an autonomous learning process from a motivation-psychological perspective, because learners can develop a higher motivation to continue learning by experiencing their own self-efficacy and are accordingly more successful (e.g., Bandura, 1997; Deci & Ryan, 1987; Hattie & Yates, 2014). This chapter will discuss ways to help learners reflect on themselves as learning individuals, on their competences in the foreign language, on the effective use of the tandem context, and on the perceived success of their learning activities. In this chapter, the use of a learning log as well as the results of an empirical study are presented. The Individual Tandem Learner Coaching situation is also briefly addressed, since it has meanwhile been used in many institutions offering tandem activities.
