ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the current state of autistic independence related to employment, education, housing, and other areas of life. When one or more aspects of adult independence are not in place, it will be necessary to help our clients connect with supportive resources. A review of commonly available resources to support the autistic adult’s journey toward gaining independence will also be offered. Adults with mild autism symptoms and normal intellectual functioning have been assessed to determine quality of life in different domains of life from social to employment satisfaction. The currently dreary state of independence during adulthood for autistic people has forced systems and institutions all over the world to take a hard look at important gaps that need to be filled. Employment options for adults with autism range from traditional job placements to more restricted settings such as sheltered workshops.
