ABSTRACT

This chapter offers advice to directors and editors when faced with the challenge of the self-indulgent actor. It discusses several very interesting one-person scenes for actors. These scenes might benefit from some editing and updating and that in itself is a good exercise for writers, actors, and directors. The chapter aims to reassure actors that the director, cinematographer, editor and others are there to help the actor achieve the best possible work on screen. The actor insisted that he remain seated for an interminable length of time while he internalized his emotions before rising and continuing with the scene. When more than one performer occupies the frame, the actor must realize that he may not always be essential center of interest, and that the purposes of the scene may best be served only by what he may consider preferential treatment of another player.
