ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 looks at another approach to both meditation and general self-care that is of potential value to many emerging adults: exercise, nutrition, and fitness training combined with a mindfulness dimension. Research has demonstrated that exercise, diet, and general fitness can be a major factor in physical and psychological well-being and can have particular benefits for the emerging-adult population. We introduce the use of a mantra (repeated word or phrase) as a meditation focal point that is particularly adaptable to combining with physical activity and suggest a way of engaging in exercise that becomes both a workout and meditation session. Experiential exercises include: Seated Mantra Meditation and the Mantra-Walking/Jogging Exercise.
