ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 explores a number of technology platforms that purport to support meditation practice, attentional training, and self-exploration in various ways. Technologies reviewed include Muse, which is a wearable EEG monitor that uses real-time brain state information to offer users bio-feedback during the process of meditation practice in an attempt to optimize the focus of attention during the meditation session; Binaural Beats and Brainwave Entrainment Technology, which are devices that usually combine both light and sound components to encourage relaxation or other optimal brainwave states; and Flotation Therapy, which is a type of sensory deprivation technique (originally developed in the middle of the 20th century) that helps focus the mind by reducing sensory input.
