ABSTRACT

The image of a pink triangle surrounded by a green circle became a symbolic marker of a safe space within classrooms, offices and centers indicating that individuals identifying as LGBTQ+ could feel safe within that space to express themselves without fear of judgment, harassment, or violence. The Roestone Collective in their reconceptualization of the term safe space described the cultivation and maintenance of safe spaces as “relational work.” The perception of safety will be different for each individual staff member and it is the supervisor’s responsibility to recognize the differences that exist, and work to create safe spaces for all. The creation and establishment of a safe space is symbolically and intentionally represented as the foundation of the Inclusive Supervision Model. Supervisors who would like to enhance their ability to Create a Safe Space should actively and genuinely seek out feedback and more importantly, respond in an open and receptive way when feedback is provided.
