ABSTRACT

Cultivating Holistic Development reflects a supervisor’s intentionality in acknowledging and appreciating the multiple and intersecting identities of each of their staff and welcoming every aspect of their identity into the space. This chapter provides deeper insight into how supervisors can successfully cultivate the holistic development of their supervisees. Holistic development seeks to cultivate an individual’s physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs through a professional setting. Likewise, in seeking to develop a more holistic approach to supervision, supervisors should seek to fully understand the various roles and cultural identities that are most salient for staff, and the values associated with each. Successful and inclusive supervisors seek to understand the intersecting and unique identities of their staff as a means of cultivating their holistic development in the work environment. Cultivating Holistic Development in the supervisory relationship can be characterized as the pivot point in balancing aspects of task and relationship.
