ABSTRACT

Resource recovery from municipal plants provides economic, social and financial benefits for municipal sewage plants, as well as their surrounding communities. As for sewage biogas energy harnessing, Cooperation or collaboration links should be established between the energy regulatory authorities and municipal sewage plants for harnessing biogas for reuse and transfer to the national grid is recommended. Case studies for the Chitungwiza, Firle and Crow borough municipal sewage plants indicated that there is potential to harness biogas for energy usage at the plants. At the same time, the biogas produced provides an alternative and clean source of renewable energy that also helps to combat climate change in developing countries. Three products, water, biogas and biosolids, can be efficiently harnessed by using the bioaugmentation technology and adoption of biocatalysis, such as Hycura, in municipal plants for developing countries.
